Aucklanders support the arts
From City Scene, published on 26 April, 2009.
Aucklanders are very supportive of the arts and
think they help define who we are as New Zealanders.
They also believe their local council should financially
support the arts.
These are just some of the findings in a recently released
Creative New Zealand survey, undertaken late last year.
Auckland City Council partnered with Creative NZ on this
research to ensure a robust Auckland version of
the findings.
Other local results also showed the following.
- Aucklanders regularly attend arts events and embrace new
technologies to access information and engage.
- Aucklanders participate in the arts, and across all art
forms. Frequency of participation appears to
have increased since 2005 (when the survey was
last done).
- Festivals and events celebrating culture and diversity
appear to be increasingly important to Aucklanders and make them feel proud to
be an Aucklander.
- Major cultural institutions, facilities and venues are
most important as contributors
to Auckland being a world-class city.
"It's great to see so many of our citizens attending and
participating in arts-related activities," says Councillor Toni Millar, deputy
chairperson of the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee.
"As well as this, I must acknowledge the key role
the council plays in delivering
and supporting the events, and contributing to major facilities, venues and
cultural institutions which help Aucklanders feel proud about their city."
