Walk on a highway

From City Scene, published on 3 May, 2009.

Walkers and cyclists will get the rare opportunity to use the new State Highway 20 (SH20) Mt Roskill Extension, before it opens to vehicles later in the month.

The open day for the 4.5km extension on Saturday, 9 May, is anticipated to be very popular and it is advised that you use public transport or walk to the entrances - at the Sandringham Road roundabout, Dominion Road, Hillsborough Road onramp and Richardson Road.

Cyclists will have access from 10am-11am, with pedestrian-only access between 11am and 3pm.

Auckland City Council has worked closely with NZ Transport Agency to create a dedicated cycle path to run alongside the new section of motorway. The cycle path forms part of the Waikaraka cycleway, linking cycling routes in Hillsborough and Mt Roskill.

It will be officially opened on Friday, 15 May.

The SH20 motorway extension is part of the Western Ring Route - a 48km alternative to SH1 between Manukau City and Albany via SH20, SH16 and SH18.
