stop boxes.

To ensure the safety of cyclists in Auckland city,
motorists are reminded that advance stop boxes are for the use of cyclists only.
Advance stop boxes are designated areas at intersections
where cyclists can wait in front of other traffic. This way, cyclists are more
visible to drivers and it helps to avoid conflict with traffic.
"Auckland City Council is committed to making the city as
safe as possible for cyclists, and bike boxes are part of this commitment," says
Transport Committee chairperson, Councillor Ken Baguley.
"However motorists must ensure they keep clear of these
boxes and be mindful of cyclists at all times."
As the council upgrades or reseals intersections, it is
policy wherever possible to install advance stop boxes.

How to use them:
Cyclists - When traffic is slowing or has stopped at the
traffic lights, cyclists can move to the front of the traffic queue, into the
advanced stop box area. Turning cyclists should make their intentions known to
other traffic by indicating.
Motorists - Should allow cyclists time to move off when the
lights turn green.
