News - Council crest removed

From City Scene, published on 10 May, 2009.

For the first time ever, the 5m-high crest on the northern face of Auckland City Council's Administration Building has been taken down for maintenance and repainting.

Workers abseiled the central city building (as pictured) to remove the hand-beaten aluminium crest, installed in the 1970s.

As the city's formal "coat of arms", it includes heraldic regional symbols such as kiwi birds, flax, and a sailing ship.

It will be reinstalled when the work on it has finished.
