Transforming Tamaki - announcement
From City Scene, published on 17 May, 2009.
Last week, Auckland City Council announced plans to work with central government
agencies to significantly develop Tamaki.
In addition, the council is also planning to invest $373.3 million in the area
over the next 10 years. This includes projects to improve public transport, create
safer roads and increase employment opportunities.
The Tamaki Transformation Programme is a long-term collaborative approach providing
better housing, infrastructure, social services, employment prospects and economic
growth in Tamaki Edge (Glen Innes, Panmure and Point England). This programme will
build on investment and planning for the area undertaken by the council. Tamaki
Edge has long been marked as one of the key areas for growth, development and innovation
in our city.
"I'm pleased to see that central government has also recognised Tamaki's potential
and that we are working together on this project," says Mayor of Auckland city,
Hon. John Banks.
"These plans will secure Tamaki's future as a quality community and economic
growth centre - this is great news for Tamaki residents and for wider Auckland,"
says Mr Banks. Council staff with specialist experience will be seconded to the
programme and a team of advisers will assist with the implementation as needed.
