News in brief - Waiheke Island rubbish contract
From City Scene, published on 17 May, 2009.
Dealing efficiently with rubbish and recycling is a key part of the council's
commitment to keeping Auckland a clean, safe and environmentally responsible city.
Since January, council officers have been working on the tender process for waste
and recycling services on Waiheke Island.
After careful consideration, it is to be recommended that
TransPacific Industries
(NZ) Ltd, will replace the current local provider as they have been found to provide
the tender that offers the best value. The 10-year contract is expected to save
Auckland City Council ratepayers a total of $6 million dollars.
Previous concerns raised by Waiheke residents that the use of wheelie bins would
be too difficult on some of the island's steep, narrow paths has been recognised
and residents will be offered a choice of bins or bags.
