Coyle Park in Pt Chevalier - one of the city's most popular
"green spaces" - has received an attractive new installation that makes
innovative use of wood that potentially would have
gone to waste.
After historic macrocarpa trees in the park needed to be
felled, Tim Codyre, an artist trained in traditional Maori carving techniques,
formed an ornate arch out of one of the trees.
The arch features traditional carving work depicting some
of the cultural mythology for the area. Located by the Bangor Street entrance,
it is an artistic centrepiece for the park, which was one of the main venues for
this year's Music in Parks series.
Funding for the creation of the arch was provided by the
council's small local improvement project (SLIPs) fund, assigned by the Western
Bays Community Board.
