Year 1 pupils from Pt Chevalier Primary took part in a special marine challenge at Auckland Zoo's Sealion Shores on World Environment Day (5 June) - a reward for the school's outstanding sustainability initiatives.

The zoo's team leader of elephants/carnivores Andrew Coers (pictured) gave the eager young environmentalists the chance to meet New Zealand fur seals and Californian sealions up close, and learn about the dangers of plastic pollution to marine life, and how they could help.

The school recently won a Silver Award from Enviroschools for its efforts, which have included establishing an orchard, organic vegetable gardens, worm farms, plant nursery, waste-free lunches, walking buses, and helping local community projects at Meola Reef and Meola Creek.

The school also helps grow mealworms for some of Auckland Zoo's animals.

The zoo's Discovery and Learning department is offering the marine challenge to schools that demonstrate outstanding efforts for the environment.
