Quality underfoot

From City Scene, published on 9 August, 2009.

Footpaths across Auckland city are regularly monitored and sites that need repairing are attended to by the council.

One such site is Apirana Avenue in Glen Innes, where the footpath has suffered from surface cracking. Reasons for the damage include heavy vehicles crossing over the footpaths and utility companies digging up the footpaths.

As there was not one specific cause for the cracking, Auckland City Council will pay for half of the repairs and the council's footpath contractors, JFC Ltd, will pay the balance. However, the council will recover some of the above costs from parties contributing to the failure, to the extent where it is practical and possible.

Footpath facts:

  • The council owns 2214km of footpaths across the city.
  • Over the last year, the council upgraded about 202,000m2 of footpaths to improve accessibility and safety.
  • The council uses recycled concrete and road millings as footpath foundations.
