Council committed to protecting city's heritage
Iconic: Paykel House (pictured) and Kent's Bakery will now
receive significant protection.

Five new heritage buildings have received significant
protection from demolition, wilful damage or major alterations under new
Auckland City District Plan changes adopted by Auckland City Council recently.
The buildings, which were nominated by the public, have
been given Category B status after also meeting the
heritage assessment
criteria.
The iconic buildings to be protected by the district plan
changes include:
- Paykel House on St Stephens Avenue, Parnell
- Swan Hotel on Stanley Street, Parnell
- Kent's Bakery on Osbourne Street, Newmarket
- McLaren Service Station, on Remuera Road, Remuera
- Kent's Building on Khyber Pass Road, Newmarket.
Councillor Aaron Bhatnagar, chairperson of the City
Development Committee, says he is pleased.
"These buildings are a legacy of our past, but also
contribute to our city's distinctive identity today," he says.
"Each is a great example of a particular architectural
style, reflecting the richness of Auckland's built heritage, from the Georgian
timber construction of the Swan Hotel to the brick and concrete offices of
Kent's Building.
"I am delighted we can protect and preserve these special
buildings for the enjoyment of present and future generations."
