Council awards $100,000 in heritage grants

With Auckland Heritage Festival finishing today, 4 October, the successful applicants for the 2009 natural and cultural heritage grants were officially announced at a special ceremony at Motat.

Across the city a total of $100,000 was presented for 21 projects this included the provision for easier access to the lava cave in Mt Eden, weed and pest control on Great Barrier and Waiheke islands, and the installation of a sprinkler system at the St Jude's Church in Avondale.

There were eight cultural heritage grants (money for restoration of heritage buildings) and 13 natural heritage grants (money for ecological conservation projects on private land in the Hauraki Gulf islands).

"Auckland City Council is committed to maintaining the city's heritage as much as possible and these projects are great examples of this commitment," says Councillor Aaron Bhatnagar, chairperson of the City Development Committee.
