Turning back the hands of time
Restoration: Auckland Art Gallery clock tower gets a face lift.
From City Scene, published on 1 November, 2009.
The refurbishment of the Auckland Art Gallery clock tower
is ticking closer to its completion date, and should be finished in a couple
of weeks.
Improvements will return the tower to its post-1887
appearance, and include a fresh coat of paint, restoration of the slate roofs
and clock faces, and recapturing of damaged and lost design features.
Of the lost design features is the gallery roof's
original cresting (the decorative lacework along the roof ridge), which is now
being replicated from scratch thanks to a small surviving piece of the
original cast iron ridge cresting.
To keep up to date on the
gallery's redevelopment.
