Auckland's most prominent public space celebrates its 30th anniversary today.

Aotea Square was officially opened on 1 November 1979 by Sir Dove-Myer Robinson and has since been the venue for various open-air concerts, political rallies and other gatherings.

The square is currently undergoing a major facelift with repairs to the roof of the Civic car park beneath it. The new square is set to reopen in October 2010, just in time for its 31st anniversary.

Pictured to the right is the square in 1981 (inset) and an artist's illustration of what the square will look like when the facelift is completed.
