Tamaki Drive safety issues discussed
Keeping safe: Cycling on Tamaki Drive
From City Scene, published on 1 November, 2009.
Auckland City Council plans a number of safety-focussed
initiatives for Tamaki Drive, following the recent serious cycling accident.
Initiatives, announced at a forum discussing Tamaki Drive
cycling and safety issues, include:
- an education campaign to encourage motorists and
cyclists to look out for each other, starting later this month
- safety improvements to the intersection of Tamaki Drive
and Ngapipi Road by February
- an investigation of ideas generated by the forum.
The forum saw more than 30 representatives from a diverse
range of groups, including the police, New Zealand Automobile Association,
cycle clubs and residents, all of whom welcomed the opportunity for an "around
the table" discussion about the situation.
A working party, representing the various groups
involved, will now consider those ideas.
