North-western cycleway to be completed
Safer transport option: Completion of the north-western cycleway,
running from central Auckland to Waterview, will form a vital link from
Waterview to the Te Atatu cycleway

Work to complete the last 1.2km stretch of Auckland's popular north-western cycleway
has begun. Part of Auckland's wider cycle network, the north-western route runs
for 12km - between Newton Road in the CBD and Te Atatu in Waitakere city.
Previously, riders travelling the length of the route had to traverse hilly backstreets
due to uncompleted sections. The programme of work is scheduled to take about three
months and will complete these missing sections. This will allow safer and more
convenient travel for the 500-plus cyclists who use this route daily.
"It's good to see this project nearing completion" says Councillor Ken Baguley,
chairperson of the Transport Committee.
"The north-western cycleway is an essential part of our region's transport infrastructure.
It offers a safer transport option for Aucklanders who choose to cycle, while easing
the pressures of bicycles and vehicles sharing
the roads."
Future plans include working with the New Zealand Transport Agency to investigate
options on how to extend the cycleway further east, as well as future upgrades to
the existing route.

Auckland's cycle network at a glance
There are about 30km of dedicated cyclelanes throughout the city, and a further
35km of cycleways that share bus lanes and footpaths. Projects for this financial
year include a shared walking and cycle path along Mt Roskill's cone that will close
the link along the State Highway 20 cycleway; improved facilities in Onehunga; work
in Upper Queen Street; and providing cycle racks in Grey Lynn.
