Super City ward and local board details released

Proposed ward and board boundaries: Auckland city will have a total of four wards and eight local boards.

The Local Government Commission has presented its proposals on the boundaries and representation arrangements for the new Auckland Council.

Under the Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009, the Commission is required to determine boundaries for the new Auckland Council, wards and local boards, ward and board names and the number of members per local board.

The Commission is proposing:

  • 12 wards, comprised of eight wards with two councillors each, and four wards with one councillor each, creating to a total of 20 councillors
  • 19 local boards
  • Local board membership numbers ranging from five to nine; a total of 126 board members.

The full proposals can be viewed at New Zealand Local Government Commission or at any public libraries across the Auckland region.

The Commission is seeking feedback on its proposals, and Auckland City Council will be making a submission. The goal is to ensure that the Local Government Commission's proposals provide effective local representation and democracy for our communities and represent the people of Auckland city appropriately.

All submissions must be received by 5pm on Friday, 11 December.

What it means for Auckland city

Under the Commission's proposal, Auckland city will have a total of four wards and eight local boards. In total the four wards will have six councillors, and the eight local boards will have 48 board members. Please see the map pictured right.
