Notice of by-election

As a result of an extraordinary vacancy, under section 120 of the Local Electoral Act 2001, notice is given that on Wednesday, 9 April 2008, a by-election will be held under the first-past-the-post electoral system by postal vote for one councillor for the Avondale-Roskill Ward.

Nominations

Candidates must be nominated on a nomination paper obtainable during normal business hours by:

  •  visiting the electoral office, Independent Election Services Ltd, ground floor, Bledisloe House, 24 Wellesley Street West, Auckland
  •  online
  •  phoning 307 7211.

Nominations of candidates must be received at the electoral office (at the above address) no later than noon on Tuesday, 19 February 2008.

Nominations must be accompanied by a deposit of $200 (GST inclusive, payable by cash or cheque).

A candidate may submit a candidate profile statement with their nomination paper for sending out with the voting documents to electors. An attachment to the nomination paper outlines rules and procedures governing candidate profile statements.

Electoral roll

The electoral roll to be used for the by-election closes at 4pm on Tuesday, 19 February 2008 and can be inspected during normal business hours from Tuesday, 22 January 2008 to Tuesday, 19 February 2008 at the following locations:

  •  Independent Election Services Ltd, ground floor, Bledisloe House, 24 Wellesley Street West, Auckland
  •  Avondale Library, 93 Rosebank Road
  •  Blockhouse Bay Library, 578 Blockhouse Bay Road
  •  Mt Roskill Library, 546 Mt Albert Road
  •  Avondale, Blockhouse Bay, Lynfield and Mt Roskill Postshops.

Enrolment for inclusion on the Residential Electoral Roll is conducted through the Electoral Enrolment Centre of New Zealand Post. Applications for enrolment should be made through your local postshop.

Enrolment for inclusion on the Ratepayers Electoral Roll is conducted through the electoral office of the Auckland City Council. Applications for enrolment should be made on the prescribed form available from the electoral office (at the above address) or www.aucklandcity.govt.nz.

Following closure of the roll, the electoral officer may – on application of any person who is or claims to be entitled to be enrolled, or any other person or otherwise – make any necessary corrections to the names, addresses, occupations, abbreviations, or marks appearing in the electoral roll.
