Painting and drawing
From the ground up - mixed media
This class approaches painting as a construction process. It will essentially
operate as a series of mini workshops that will consider the way an image is
'built' starting with the choice and preparation of the initial support and
working through the possibilities that present themselves at each stage within
the development of a painting.
Issues relating to idea generation will be considered and discussed. Students
should however come with a 'sense of a project' that they would like to develop.
The emphasis will be on thinking through making. Students will be encouraged to
consider the relationship between material, process and idea.
The objective of the course is to arm students with a 'grab bag' of
media/application options that will enable them to effectively translate their
ideas onto a surface.
Maximum enrolment is 8.

A painting project
In this course participants are encouraged to focus and develop a clear and
personal painting approach in a relaxed and supportive environment. Set projects
will be available and will vary each term.
An open and individual approach to the projects will be welcomed. Students
are also able to explore their own individual projects and ideas, but must come
ready and prepared to begin. This course is suitable for those who have
completed several of the stage 2 painting classes or who are relatively
experienced and motivated to extend their practice towards a more independent
level.
Basic drawing materials will be required for the first class and a more
comprehensive list will be available at this time.
Maximum enrolment is 15.

Observational
drawing
This series of classes will explore what it is that we do when we draw from
objects. How can we translate what is seen in three-dimensional space into a
drawn image and why do our perception of things often differ to what is there?
In a supportive studio setting, students will be encouraged to explore their
personal view of the world, both through a range of media and through developing
an individual visual language. Each class will offer a slightly different angle
on a range of objects and settings.
John has extensive experience in teaching art classes and has a particular
interest in learning through the process of drawing.
Maximum enrolment is 10.

Paint
and possibility - a painters toolbox
This process-based class is most essentially about discovery. The only
prerequisite for the class is a willingness to freely experiment with media,
tools and techniques.
The aim is to start to understand how paint and process might come together
on a surface. Students will be guided through a range of exercises that will
explore paint application and removal, compositional and mark-making approaches
and methods of idea generation.
Painting surfaces will be looked at and considered in relation to all these
explorations. In a relaxed and supportive environment, you will be encouraged to
find a visual language that interests and excites you and which can be extended
into a personal painting practice.
Maximum enrolment is 8.
