Digital photography (Stage 1)
This course is an introduction to photography for those who own a digital camera.
The course covers conventional camera handling skills alongside techniques specific
to digital photography.
Over the duration of the course, students will discuss the fundamentals of composition
through to the best way to prepare your digital files for high quality prints. There
will be some demonstrations of image manipulation in Photoshop but this is not an
in depth course in Photoshop software.
New skills will be practiced through weekly photographic projects. Students need
to bring a digital camera with a manual option and the camera manual (book).

Digital photography (Stage 2)
This is a follow-on for those who have completed Digital Photography Stage 1,
or a similar introductory course. Design elements, conceptual development, and
presentation will be explored through an ongoing (4 week) project of the
student's choosing. Topics will be tailored to individual class requirements,
but emphasis will be placed on group discussion and analysis of work produced.
Students need to bring a digital camera with a manual option and the camera
manual (book).

Camera and composition
This course is for beginner level students who want to understand how their SLR
film or digital camera works (this would also include a high end compact digital
camera). Over the duration of the course, we will cover all the basic aspects of
camera handling including: exposure, depth-of-field, focus, focal length and programme
options (if you have them).
Alongside this we will explore (through 2 photo-taking assignments) the impact
that the technical aspects have on the composition of your photograph. Students
need to bring their camera and manual (if you have one) to the first class.

Camera and composition
This course is for students who already have an understanding of how their camera
works and wish to extend their visual abilities. We will look at the influential
areas of lighting and colour and the impact they have on your photographs, as well
as how to employ elements of design into your images in order to create striking
compositions. Each class session will have an accompanying assignment and follow-up
discussion.

Workshop: Black and white photography open workshop
This course is for those students who have a basic understanding of how to use
a SLR or non digital camera and would like to learn black and white darkroom techniques
and to explore their photo taking interests. All levels are accommodated, from beginners
to those students with some experience.
A comprehensive guide to black and white darkroom techniques will be taught including
film processing, printing, and toning. Lighting, composition and subject will be
explored through both group critiques and one on one tuition, and the study of related
visual material. This course has an open approach to learning and students will
be encouraged to develop their own ideas and interests.
Please bring your camera to the first session. All photographic equipment and
chemicals are provided. Students will need to bring their own film and photographic
paper, or purchase these from the Artstation office.
