Photography
Digital
photography
This course is an introduction to photography for those who own a digital camera. The course covers conventional camera handling skills alongside techniques specific to digital photography.
Over the duration of the course, students will discuss the fundamentals of composition through to the best way to prepare your digital files for high quality prints. There will be some demonstrations of image manipulation in Photoshop but this is not an in depth course in Photoshop software. New skills will be practiced through weekly photographic projects.
Students need to bring a digital camera with a manual option and the camera manual (book). Maximum enrolment is 7.

Camera
and composition
This course is aimed at beginner level students who want to understand how their SLR film or digital camera works (this would also include a high end compact digital camera). Over the duration of the course, we will cover all the basic aspects of camera handling including: exposure, depth-of-field, focus, focal length and programme options (if you have them). Alongside this we will explore (through 2 photo-taking assignments) the impact that the technical aspects have on the composition of your photograph. Students need to bring their camera and manual (if you have one) to the first class. Maximum enrolment is 7.

Workshop: Cyanotype (Blue tone) photography
This is a day of experimentation and exploration of the cyanotype process.
Cyanotype is an early photographic method invented in the 1840s involving none of the usual photographic chemicals - this is an easy process that requires no prior darkroom experience or camera skills. We will be working with images copied onto transparent sheets, as well as objects that are laid directly onto the sensitised surface. Your choice of surface could be watercolour paper, fabric or even wood. The resulting cyanotype (blue) image can then be hand-coloured, drawn upon, painted or collaged.
Maximum enrolment is 7. Note: examples of the process can be viewed in the Artstation office.

Workshop: Argyrotype workshop (Brown tones)
This process was developed by Dr Mike Ware in 1991 in order to produce brown silver prints onto artists' papers. It is a twentieth century version of early Victorian processes such as the Kallitype and Van Dyke Brown.
No photographic skills are required for this class and it is an interesting way for artists and students to manipulate images. It can be used to create either images (from enlarged negatives on overhead transparencies) or photograms (objects laid directly onto the paper). Using sunlight or a UV light this process results in an image of rich brown which then can be altered using toners such as blue or copper in order to change all or parts of the image colour.
Maximum enrolment is 7.
