Anzac Day parades and ceremonies

"Lest we forget"

A deep scar was left in the hearts of New Zealanders 93 years ago when our troops went into battle at Gallipoli in 1915. Help keep their memory alive by attending an ANZAC Day service to remember and honour those who fought for our country.

Dawn Commemoration Service

Join Auckland Mayor John Banks and the Governor General of New Zealand for the annual, Auckland City Council supported, dawn commemoration service, starting at 6am at the Cenotaph Court of Honour at the Auckland War Memorial Museum in Auckland Domain. Another service follows at 11am.

Auckland Domain Cenotaph
Court of Honour

  • parade assembles behind the Auckland War Memorial Museum in the car park at 5.30am
  • parade marches to Court of Honour at 5.45am
  • memorial service commences at 6am
  • at the conclusion of the service parade marches back at approximately 7am.
11am service

Auckland Domain Cenotaph
Court of Honour

  • assembly at 10.15am at eastern side of the Auckland War Memorial Museum

  • parade marches to the Cenotaph at 10.50am

  • memorial service commences at 11am and concludes at noon.

Parking restrictions

Parking restrictions will be implemented from 4am to 1pm Friday 25 April on:

  • Football Road
  • The Crescent
  • Maunsell Road Extension
  • Wintergarden Road
  • Cenotaph Road
  • Museum Circuit.

Parking

  • Public parking available on the outer sports fields - the public will be asked to use the ramps provided.
  • Mobility parking on The Crescent and Maunsell Road Extension - mobility parking permit holders only.
  • Disability drop off area on Maunsell Road Extension (behind the Auckland War Memorial Museum - enter from Titoki Street as Cenotaph Road will be closed.
  • VIP parking in the Museum underground car park.

Road closures

  • Lovers Lane
  • Cenotaph Road
  • Football Road
  • The Crescent

shall be closed from 4am until 1pm on 25 April 2008.

There will be advisory signage on Cenotaph advising road closure details and parking restrictions.

Through access available for participants, staff and VIP attendees.

Buses

On Anzac Day, the Link bus will run from 5am, clockwise and anticlockwise every 15 minutes, in order to transport people to the Auckland War Memorial Museum for the Dawn Service.

Veterans who show their RSA membership badge or medals to the driver will be able to ride the buses all day for free.

The Link will follow its usual route and those who are attending the Dawn Service can alight at Auckland Hospital on the north side of the Domain, or on Parnell Road outside the Foundation for the Blind on the south side of the Domain.

Avondale

  • the parade assembles at the RSA Clubrooms in Layard Street at 9.30am
  • starts at 9.40am
  • travels along Layard Street
  • Rosebank Road
  • Great North Road to Avondale War Memorial Reserve for a service at 10am
  • at 10.30am the parade returns along Great North Road
  • Crayford Street
  • to the Clubrooms in Layard Street.

Great Barrier

  • the service starts at noon at Tryphena Hall.

College Rifles

  • assembly in Minto Road at 9.30am
  • parade starts at 9.30am
  • moving into Remuera Road
  • turning right into Haast Street
  • continues to the bottom of the street to the club by 10am.

Grey Lynn

  • parade assembles 9.30am at the corner of Castle Street and Richmond Road
  • it starts at 9.45am
  • travels along Richmond Road to Francis Street
  • service at 10am atthe RSC
  • road closure:
    • Francis Street (between Richmond Road and 5 Francis Street) for duration of the service, which concludes at 10.30am.

Mt Albert

  • assembly in car park near the shops on Alberton Avenue at 9am
  • at 9.20am the march starts
  • travels along Alberton Avenue
  • across New North Road
  • to the Mt Albert War Memorial
  • service at the Cenotaph at 9.30am - 10.30am
  • pack down concludes by noon.
Mt Eden
  • a parade starts at 10.50am from Dexter Avenue
  • travels along Dominion Road to the Mt Eden War Memorial Hall, 487 Dominion Road, for an 11am service.

Mt Roskill

  • march assembles in May Road at the intersection of May Road and Cullen Avenue at 9am
  • at 9.20am it travels north along May Road to the Cenotaph and War Memorial Hall on Mays Road
  • service at 9.30am
  • concludes at 10.15am
  • pack down by noon.

Mt Wellington/Panmure

  • the march assembles outside the RSA Clubrooms on Pleasant View Road at 8.45am
  • parade starts at 9am
  • travels along Pleasant View Road
  • Jellicoe Road
  • Queens Road
  • Pilkington Road
  • to the community centre for service at 9.30 before returning to the club.

Newmarket

  • an informal service is being held at 10am at the Olympic Reserve by the Olympic pool on behalf of the Newmarket RSA and Newmarket Business Association.

Onehunga

  • assembly at 9am on corner of Trafalgar Street and Onehunga Mall
  • march departs at 9.30am
  • turns right into Onehunga Mall
  • right into Church Street
  • left into Pearce Street
  • right into Onehunga Mall
  • right into Princes Street
  • concluding at the RSA Clubrooms about 10.30am.

Orakei

  • the parade assembles at the Kupe Street car park at 10.15am
  • starts at 10.20am
  • travels to the Orakei RSA Clubrooms at 178 Kepa Road for a service outside the clubrooms
  • concludes by 11.30am.

Otahuhu

  • a parade will leave the intersection of Piki Thompson Way and Mangere Road at 9.45am
  • will travel to the Cenotaph on the corner of Mangere and Great South roads for a service
  • continue along Great South Road and Atkinson Avenue
  • ending at the Otahuhu Working Men's Club on King Street.
  • road closure:
    • road closures required for Mangere Road (between Walmsley Road and Great South Road)
    • Atkinson Road (between Great South Road and King Street).

Pt Chevalier

  • the parade assembles in Alberta Street at 10.15am
  • starts at 10.30am
  • travels along Alberta Street
  • Pt Chevalier Road
  • Great North Road
  • concludes at the RSA Clubrooms (opposite Kiwi Road) by 10.45am.

St Heliers

  • assembly at Goldie Street car park, adjacent to Vellenoweth Green, St Heliers at 9.45am
  • departure at 10am along Tamaki Drive
  • to the Brookfield Memorial for a service and laying of the wreaths
  • at 10.25am, the march proceeds along Turua Street to the Tamaki Ex-Services Hall by 10.30am
  • road closure:
    • between The Parade and Turua Street, St Heliers from 9.45am until 10am.

Waiheke Island (dawn)

  • assembly at 5.55am at the Cenotaph
  • service at 6am and concludes at 6.10am
  • Civic parade and service
    • parade assembles at a point halfway along Belgium Street at 10.45am
    • commences at 10.50am
    • proceeds along Belgium Street for a service in front of the Cenotaph at the intersection of Belgium Street and Ostend Road
    • service concludes by 11.30am
    • pack down by noon.

Waiheke Island (civil)

  • parade assembles Belgium Street (from a point halfway down Belgium St) at 10.45am
  • march starts 10.55am
  • travels along Belgium Street
  • service in front of the Cenotaph at the intersection of Belgium Street and Ostend Road
  • service concludes by 11.30am.
 

Auckland War Memorial Museum

Auckland War Memorial Museum was built as a memorial to the 12,000 people from the Auckland province that died in the first and second world wars.

Each autumn the museum remembers the sacrifices these people made for others by hosting a wide range of family activities and exhibitions.

The museum opens at 6.45am on 25 April, immediately after the dawn service, and closes between 10.15am and noon for the commemorative service. No donations are required on Anzac Day.
