Go By Bike BreakfastBigger, better, cleaner
The event, held in Aotea Square, was the biggest so far with 750 cyclists attending, an increase of 200 on last year's number. This figure exceeded expectations, proving that more people see cycling as a healthy and fun alternative to getting around the city, and providing great motivation for the 2009 event. Two bicycles were given away, one from Bauer and one from Avanti Plus Mt Eden. There were also heaps of spot prizes and goodie bags for all. Two prizes were given away to the best dressed cyclists - one to a couple of Maunsell employees, who came dressed as enormous bees, and the other to midwives riding vintage and modern bicycles who came in period costumes. Only nine per cent of waste generated at the event went to landfill, the rest was either composted or recycled. Both TV One and TV3 reported from Aotea Square on the morning of the event providing great coverage of the event itself and of cycling as a transport alternative. Tune in later this year for information on the 2009 event! Cycling busesCycling buses are one way to make a statement on your way to the Go by bike breakfast. This year a total of 85 cyclists joined official cycling buses to arrive en masse at Aotea Square - 25 came along Tamaki Drive, 30 along Dominion Road and 30 via the North-western cycleway. A commuter group rode from Devonport via Lake Road, Wairau Road, Greenhithe and the North-western cycleway. This 50km journey was made at an average speed of around 27kph. The distance was covered in approximately two hours. Event sponsor Maunsell organised their own cycling bus departing from their offices in Newmarket. Forty Maunsell employees took part and their team won the prize for biggest group.
