Matariki Festival.

Celebrate Matariki, the Maori New Year, during Auckland's Matariki Festival 09.

Matariki is a time for sharing kai, rituals, entertainment, hospitality and knowledge.

There are loads of great events and activities happening across the Auckland region from 24 June to 24 July, giving people of all cultures the chance to come together, and celebrate this special time of year, unique to Aotearoa.

The Matariki Festival is packed full of great ways to celebrate Maori New Year.

Matariki Native Noise 09
Music
Celebrate Matariki in the heart of the city centre with Native Noise, a concert with a full line up of leading Aotearoa musicians performing in the historic setting of the Auckland Town Hall. Headed by chart-topper Tiki and supported by a roots-reggae line-up of kiwi favourites, Katchafire, Three Houses Down and Cornerstone Roots, Native Noise is a favourite every Matariki Festival.

Sir Plus and the Requirements

Hot on the heels of three sell-out shows at Auckland Festival 09, Tama Waipara presents Sir Plus and The Requirements, in a fresh and exciting approach to the theatre and music of old school cabaret. Fusing musical icons such as Prince Tui Teka, Kid Creole and Burt Bacharach with a touch of funk and groove, the show takes its cue from Sergeant Pepper, with Sir Plus as ‘the long lost Polynesian cousin.’

Think globally, act locally – Maori style. This three-part sustainability symposium will explore the concept of sustainability through traditional and contemporary Maori thinking. Each night considers a number of case studies with experts in their fields looking at how the unique Maori worldview can contribute to the challenges facing local, national and international communities.
