Protests, demonstrations and rallies

While demonstrations, protests and rallies do not need a permit, we recommend that you contact us to ensure there are no clashes with other permitted events, and to assist you in holding a safe activity.

Safety suggestions for protests

  1. Advise local authorities of the activity to ensure the area is safe (i.e. roadworks, other events, etc.)

  2. Consult with the local police
    1. With notice they may be able to support in safe protest route
    2. Never attempt to protest on the road without the presence of Police to manage traffic, as this would greatly endanger your participants safety and is illegal
  3. Dedicate a few responsible participants to be marshals
    1. Marshals should wear fluro vests, so they are easily identifiable to other participants
    2. Responsibilities may include:
  1. keeping people together to avoid participants wondering into live traffic and to lessen impact on general public
  2. asking drivers of parked cars to wait until protesters have passed before moving out
  3. carrying a cell phone to call emergency services if a situation does arise
  4. knowledge of protest logistics and key contact details
  5. ientifying and helping any participants who may have special needs e.g. elderly, disabled, etc.
  1. Brief protesters on safety before moving from gathering point. Include the following information:
  1. role of marshals - help if they need it, first aid, information
  2. route being taken
  3. any hazards along the route especially live traffic lanes or road works
  4. facilities and proceedings for end of protest/march
  5. banners/signage being carried - take care of other people around you, take it away with you, don't litter.
