Auckland Festival of Photography

The Auckland Festival of Photography is a city-wide contemporary art and cultural event which takes place within Auckland's major galleries, project spaces, non-gallery venues and public sites during June each year. The programme includes a mix of emerging and established artists and comprises existing works and creation of new work. Running since 2004, the annual festival is produced by the Auckland Festival of Photography Trust. It is a not for profit charitable trust working to further the presence and awareness of photography in Auckland through joint programming, audience development and profile raising activities. We are proud to support a key exhibition within the festival - Instantanes, by French photographer Michel Birot. "Come down the path that leads from the changing room to the tunnel and onto the playing field. Confront the hardships to one's body of this sport, and turn it into a wonderful field of play." As part of the traditional rivalry between rugby nations, and in the build up to the Rugby World Cup 2011, we see the merging of art and sport through Birot's emotive black and white work capturing the passion of rugby. Born in 1953 at Auriac, Michel Birot has lived and worked in Paris since 1974. He started his career as a professional photographer with Le Figaro Magazine and then followed on by working in fashion and in advertising. Michel Birot, who has been photographing rugby in black and white for more than a decade, is today editor-in-chief of the monthly magazine "Attitude Rugby".
