Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship 2010

The best young surfers in the world will compete for waves at Piha from 20 to 28 January when Auckland hosts the 2010 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship.

The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship 2010 will see the world's best under 18-year-old surfers, from almost 30 countries, battling it out in front of large crowds in the biggest challenge of the junior surfing year.

The spectacle at Piha is an Olympic-type event with surfers competing both individually and for their countries in front of large crowds.

This event is being organised by Surfing New Zealand.

Official opening ceremony

Come down to Selwyn Reserve, Mission Bay on Wednesday, 20 January and welcome the world's best junior surfers from more than 25 countries to Auckland!

There will be plenty going on from 10am at Mission Bay, including:

  • a surfing simulator
  • swing ball and beach volleyball
  • sand castle competition with some great prizes
  • Quiksilver surfers signing posters
  • roving performers
  • face painting and team flag colouring for the kids
  • the City Nippers
  • a special Quiksilver retail outlet.

The official formalities start at 1pm and include an Olympic-style march, traditional Maori welcome, "Sands of the World" ceremony and more.

Although there is plenty of on and off-street parking at Mission Bay, it is expected that this will be at a premium during this event.

A number of buses run from Britomart to the Eastern Bays, stopping at Mission Bay.

Getting to Piha

Piha Beach is a small coastal village on the west coast of Auckland in the Waitakere Ranges - about 45 minutes drive from central Auckland.

Parking at Piha during the surfing championship is at Piha Domain and South Piha.

Overflow parking is at Steadfast Park and the camping grounds. There will be a shuttle service to the beach for a gold coin donation.

Liquor ban

There will be a 24 hour liquor ban in place at Piha during the surfing championships.
