Duration: approximately 50 minutes
Distance: 9.5 kilometres

Map - Hobson Bay Orakei Basin circuit

This popular route passes by some unique historical, coastal and geological features. Beginning at Auckland Domain head down Ayr Street, passing Kinder House and Ewelme Cottage. Continue along Shore Road, Orakei Road and over the Purewa Bridge. This bridge crosses between the Orakei Basin on the right hand side, an ancient volcanic crater, and Hobson Bay on the left. Follow Ngapipi Road along the shores of Hobson Bay and Whakatakataka Bay and along Tamaki Drive. Make your way through the famous rose gardens at Dove Myer Robinson Park, up the hill to the Holy Trinity Cathedral. This is the perfect place for a rest, before walking back to Auckland Domain to cool down.

If you get a chance, take some time to visit Kinder House and Ewelme Cottage. Kinder House, which is now a gallery and museum, was the first and largest of the three stone houses in Parnell. Ewelme Cottage is a well-preserved early colonial house built in 1864 for Reverend Vicesimus Lush. It is now administered as a museum.
