Walkways

Our walkways allow you to enjoy our unique and valued natural environment. They also take you through some of the city's most historic landmarks. Whether its wandering the Rocky Bay Ramble on Waiheke Island or strolling the coastal walks in the isthmus, there's something for everyone.

The walkways pass though many of the 800 parks and open spaces cared for by Auckland City Council.

Walkways detailed on this site include:

Waiheke Island - free guided walks

Auckland Council is offering free guided walks on Waiheke Island this summer.

The walks take place:

  • every Wednesday from 1 December 2010 to 30 March 2011 (except 29 December 2010 and 5 January 2011) and
  • every Sunday from 16 January to 17 February 2011.

The walks start at 10.45am from Matiatia Wharf on Waiheke Island and last around two hours. They include hilly sections but are all on formed Auckland Council walkways. They are suitable for most ability levels.

Each week the guide will choose a different route from the wharf at Matiatia. Most walks will end in the village of Oneroa, which has shops, cafes and a world class beach. Oneroa is only 20 minutes walk from the ferry back to Auckland.

Visitors from Auckland should catch the 10am ferry from the downtown ferry terminal. They will be met by the guide on the wharf when the boat arrives at Waiheke Island. Walkers should bring sensible shoes, water and sun block.

No booking is required. The walks are free.
