Introduction
The Matiatia Headland Walk begins and ends at the ferry building at Matiatia
Bay. It explores the stunning headland of Matiatia including secluded beaches,
cliff-side vistas, coastal mansions and a post 1600's Pa site. Approaching
Owhanake Bay, you can either walk the Owhanake valley back to Oneroa village,
which would be an extra hour, or return to the Ferry Terminal at Matiatia via
World War II bunkers and a remnant forest.
This self-guided walk will help you learn more about the first pakeha settlers
in the Greater Te Huruhi area. It explains the history of Matiatia Bay and how
it became the main gateway for Waiheke Island.
See Walkway guide and map for more information about:
- the Waiheke Island family that entertained the famous actress Vivien Leigh
- what the mysterious concrete structures on Delamore Drive were used for and
- why the fastest ferry service to Waiheke Island was over 40 years ago.
We would love to hear about your experience, please provide your feedback using
the online survey form.
