New Zealand Sport and Physical Activity Survey results from 1997-2001 show that:

  • Auckland city's physical activity levels are declining
  • Auckland city's physical activity rates are lower across all groups than the national average.

Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) has a vision of New Zealand being the most active nation. SPARC are working with local authorities to invest in a physical activity programme for each local authority region.

Changing work and travel patterns could mean that free leisure time will be harder to come by for some people. Increasing urbanisation means we need to make more effort to promote the outdoors as our most valuable recreational facility.

Auckland City, SPARC, Sport Auckland, Procare Network Auckland and YMCA (Auckland) have partnered on the Active Communities, AkActive project with the common purpose of increasing physical activity levels.
